Adrian Grant: 'Jacko was a normal guy'

Comments 11 August 2009

When Adrian Grant, 40, launched a Michael Jackson fanzine, little did he know he would go on to befriend his hero. A producer of Thriller Live, he is also the author of Michael Jackson – A Visual Documentary, Tribute Edition (Omnibus, £19.95), out now

Was the coverage around Michael’s death over the top?
At the weekend they ran pictures of the bed where he apparently passed away. The intrusion into his life after death is as great as it was when he was alive. He was always concerned about his privacy and media intrusion and he despised the tabloids for it. Obviously, they are doing that even more so now and I can only hope his children are shielded from it.

Where were you when you found out about his death and what was your reaction?
I was at home and could not believe it. I knew he had been taken to hospital but I thought it was just exhaustion and not as serious as it turned out. It took a while to sink in; even when it was announced he had died, I still didn’t believe it. Being surrounded by his music constantly, it still feels like he is with us in spirit and I think he is a bigger star now in passing than he was before.

You went to the US for the tribute. Your thoughts?
It was good to be there. It was very emotional. I’m glad I went, I got to meet the family and have some time with Paris, who gave a very moving speech. It reminded people Michael was first and foremost a father figure. She is adorable, I gave her a copy of my book and she was very grateful. They have been brought up very well.

Are the children biologically Michael’s?
All I know is that Michael raised them 24/7, he was very much their father and the children adore him. They miss him very much obviously. The public and media perception of Michael is very different to the real person, who I spent a lot of time with. The person I met was caring and always liked to laugh. He was a genius in the studio and I don’t think he got enough credit for that when he was alive. People focused mainly on the headlines.

Lisa Marie has said he was much different in real life; that his voice was deeper and he was more regular. Was that true?
He was very aware of his image in public. I met him when he was with Lisa Marie and, again, the perception was that it was a fake relationship but it wasn’t. On the occasions I met them, they were very protective of each other. She asked Michael who I was and why I was there and he comforted her that I was a trusted person and then she opened up. They were like a normal couple. He would ask her opinion of his songs and play with her children. The Michael I knew was regular person away from the cameras but very shy.

What was it like the first time you met him?
I didn’t know what to expect. You have a press perception of what Michael is like and he is a massive superstar. The first time I met him, he came into a recording studio, he had no make-up on and he invited me to Neverland for the weekend.

How old were you?
I started the Off The Wall fanzine when I was 19 and he invited me over when I was 21. I have a lot to thank him for, I did not think I would start a fanzine and go on to produce a West End show. He was the inspiration and I took perfectionism from his lead. He told me to always do the best I could. He could be a tough person when he needed to be. He took a lot of knocks but always got back up again.

What are your thoughts on the paedophilia allegations?
The Michael Jackson I spent time with was an innocent man.

Would you have been comfortable to leave your children with him for the night?
I have a daughter and I have been to Neverland many times. My daughter has sleepovers and Michael was a great father. If you know someone and trust them and feel comfortable then I do not see anything wrong with it.

New Petition: In memory of James Bulger

Comments 27 March 2009

The petition text written by the author of the petition:

I have started this petition in hopes it will get enough signatures for Michael Jackson to consider singing the song “Heal The World” in memory of James Bulger at one of his upcoming London, UK shows. I am also hoping it will bring attention to a very important cause in James’s memory. The signatures collected will be sent to Michael Jackson’s Production company, MJJ Productions before July 2009 when his tour begins. For those unfamiliar with the case, James Bulger was a 2 year old boy that was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by two 10 year old boys in Liverpool, England on February 12th 1993. According to James’s mother Denise, his favorite song was “Heal The World” and James used to dance like Michael Jackson. In 2008 when James would have turned 18 years old, Denise helped start a campaign to open a Red Balloon Learner Centre in Liverpool for children so badly bullied they can no longer attend mainstream school. The school is to be named James Bulger House. Please sign my petition in honour of James Bulger and his family. I would also like to mention that James’s mother Denise will be attending one of Michael Jackson’s concerts this summer so please help make this a reality! Thank you!”

We all hope that everybody will sign it!

Please do it, it’s IMPORTANT!

Jacko to dedicate ‘Heal the World’ to James Bulger?

A Facebook campaign has been launched to ask Michael Jackon to dedicate a song to murdered Liverpool toddler James Bulger. The ‘Thriller’ singer is due to perform around 20 shows in London’s O2 Arena and a petition has started to try and persuade Jacko to devote ‘Heal the World’ to the memory of James. Tickets for the pop icon’s concert comeback tour sold out in just six hours and many more are fetching more than £1,000 each on Ebay. The creator of the Facebook group is Canadian, Ali Lightfoot. She says she has been profoundly touched by the Bulger story despite living thousands of miles away from Liverpool. And she wants to raise awareness for James’s mother Denise Fergus’s long running charity work by getting 50-year-old Jackson to dedicate a track to her and her son. Campaign creator Ali Lightfoot said: “Although I am a Canadian, I have been so profoundly touched by James Bulger’s story. “So I’ve decided to help raise awareness for his mother, Denise Fergus’s campaign to open a Red balloon Learner Centre in Liverpool. “Since Michael Jackson was James’s favourite singer I thought why not try to get MJ involved somehow and hopefully bring attention to Denise’s cause? “‘Heal The World’ was also James Bulger’s favourite song and it would be such an honour for James’s family if it was dedicated to him. “Denise Fergus and her husband Stuart are in full support of this petition and have even joined my Facebook group. “I would love it if I could help get more signatures to help bring some happiness to Denise’s life after her terrible loss.” James’s mother Denise Fergus has been a life long fan of Michael Jackson and thinks the campaign is a great idea. Denise said: “I have been a fan of Michael since I was a school girl. “I think he is great and a brilliant performer. “‘Heal the World’ was played a James’ funeral and it will always be one of my favourite Michael Jackson songs. “It would be great if Michael could sing it in memory of him, I hope people get involved and sign the petition.”

Petition:Uncover his name!

Comments 20 February 2009

June 13th , 2005 – Michael Jackson was acquitted on all 10 counts!

The Gardner School, at which he was enrolled as student shortly before his career started, honored Michael Jackson in 1989 by naming the auditorium after him. Therefore he showed up at the ceremony on October 11th, 1989 and thanked personally with a short speech.

While the case was heard the Gardner School has covered his name with a plywood box. Understandable, considering the situation at that time.

But after the acquittal the name wasn’t uncovered (until NOW!). This isn’t only an inappropriate (non-)action of the school, but even a wrong sign in public.

It’s a sign of callousness on the part of the school, a sign of disrespect and intolerance.

It is the duty of such institutions to build the children’s character and to impart knowledge. Therefore it is necessary to handle such issues very sensitively.

Now it’s our part to do something! To point out this problem to the Gardner School and hopefully to uncover Michael Jackson’s name, you easily can print out the logo of this campaign (this should demonstrate the international character of this mission.), glue it on a postcard and send it to the Gardner School. But don’t forget to sign up the online petition!
